About the play:
In the mid-1980s, Süskind reached a level of popularity comparable to that of a rock star or a film actor. His breakthrough into the top ranks of world literature came with his debut novel, Perfume, published in 1985. However, the success of Perfume was preceded by the triumph of Süskind’s monodrama The Double Bass (premiered in 1981), which achieved unprecedented success in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany, where it was staged in nearly every theater and became one of the most frequently performed German plays.
The Double Bass is a romantic comedy.
This is not a story about kings, statesmen, famous composers, or any other historical figures. It is simply about a double bassist. But so what? Does that make it less worthy of being told? Perhaps that is exactly why it will touch your heart.
At the center of this drama is a musician who has dedicated his entire life to music, yet he sits in the last row of the orchestra. What happens when we follow all the rules, devote ourselves completely, and yet life does not reward us? This play is a tribute to those who expected more from life. It will make you laugh to tears but also make you question whether the success we strive for is truly that important.
Life is not fair. Does everything really happen for a reason? Why are some more talented, wealthier, or more beautiful than others? Why do some sit in the first row of the orchestra while others remain in the back?
